Having arrived back from my December ski trip somewhat battered and bruised, I found myself giving a great deal of thought to the factors leading up to my unwelcome encounter on what one would ordinarily see as a safe and predictable slope. I decided that there are five distinct lessons to be learned from my misfortune. Lesson 1: Seemingly Safe Situations Can Hide Nasty Surprises It would seem, as our week skiing in Andorra reached the last day, that I was (unknown to me) lining up to follow in the tracks of a fellow skier who is far better known than I. It so happens that on my birthday, one full week before my own accident, the governor of the US state of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger...

Before you begin your first ski lesson, there are a few tips that will help get your instruction off to a great start. Pick your day. Attempting to ski for the first time during a busy weekend is not conducive to learning. This, plus traffic, long lift lines, and busy ski rental areas makes for a long day indeed. Instead, go midweek. This is when things are quiet and you're much more likely to get a better value and more personalized attention from your ski instructor. If you can, aim for a sunny day, and not too cold. Stay in the beginner areas as well. No one wants experienced skiers whizzing by when you're trying to learn to ski. Also, consider what learning style works for you... Everyone has...

As a skier who wants to learn to snowboard there should be a reasonably quick transition to make. You would already have gotten used to the feeling of sliding across the snow with your feet bound to equipment. But there are essential differences between the two disciplines that the skier will have to get used to. The transition from two skis to a single board may take a little getting used to. Rather than being able to spread the load across both feet which may stand as wide as you need to keep your balance, the snowboarder must stand relaxed with their weight on one edge or the other. The fact that there are no ski poles to catch yourself with may also take a little getting used to. For this reason...

Stuck In A Rut?

I sure was! I was in Tahoe last week as four BIG storms brought over ten feet of snow.  It was slick as a gut, drifted so deep in places that even Thelma (my F-250 turbo diesel truck) had a hard time getting through. After they plowed the roads, it was still a mess with melting, freezing and lotsa black ice. I skied every day. To get to the hill in the morning - I had to constantly change Thelma between  4-Wheel Drive High and Low.  It took 4WD Low (with my wheel hubs locked) to get moving in my driveway and down my side street. Once I hit the bigger street, I had to get out, unlock the wheel hubs and shift to regular 4WD.   But then it would start to snow and accumulate. I'd hit a thick spot...

There are many winter resort locations that have cleverly created separate courses for people who prefer to express their creativity by snowboarding or skiing down several courses. The snowboards require great height at times to do all of the artistic maneuvers that are possible on a snowboard, and resorts give snowboarders many opportunities to enjoy some hang time. Many snowboarders began their training by practicing with skateboards. Once people got accustomed to sliding the boards across raised platforms, they progressed to performing aerial tricks that were very stimulating. The view turned to snow when people realized that the soft powder might provide a better surface for the hard landings...

What do people want when they look for a rental property in a ski resort? Typically there are two criteria: ski-in, ski-out (who wants to get on a shuttle bus with all their ski gear?) for daytime convenience, and easy access to restaurants and shops for après-ski entertainment. In many resorts it is tricky to meet both of these objectives, since if the town is positioned (as is typical) in the valley, properties that offer easy walking distance to shops and restaurants are by definition not ski-in, ski-out, since for this they must be some way up the mountain. Whistler is a typical example. The main village is at the confluence of two mountains, Whistler and Blackcomb. The lifts...

Despite this, I enjoy boarding, but most of all I love the tranquility of the slopes. "Wii Family Ski and Snowboard" really encapsulates the spirit of a boarding holiday for me. I confess, as much as I liked the first Wii Family Ski game, I really didn't play it as much as I wanted. As the months get colder and the days get shorter, it’s inevitable that winter's on its way. Nothing can liven up a man's winter wardrobe and beat the cold quite like a good quality winter coat or jacket, but in a season as hectic as winter, it’s all too easy to leave it until its almost too late before you go out and find the one you want. To make it simple, there are a handful of options to keep in mind before you make your purchase, not least the choice of style over function. What is a winter coat and what is a winter jacket? Well, traditionally the coat is focussed on form, simplicity and style, like a pea coat or long overcoat, whereas a jacket aims to protect you from the cold and...

When I was a teenager, I skied in blue jeans. Not just any blue jeans, mind you. Of course, I wasn't cool - I was cold. Very cold. Naturally, clothing styles and technology have changed immensely since those Levis days.   Snowboard technology changes from season to season, so if you are still riding the same snowboard and boots you did years ago then you need to buy some new stuff… Especially if you have old boots. The facts are that no matter what your snowboard boot, the liners are only going to live to see about 60-65 days of riding and after that, because of the constant wetting and drying, they will expand and eventually stop your riding dead. Snowboards are constantly being updated and innovated with new sidecuts, new lightweight materials, different flexes, and base patterns. Just like in the computer world, if your snowboard is more than two seasons old than it is probably outdated. It sounds crazy but...

Blairgowrie - Perth and Kinross - is always associated with its twin settlement of Rattray which is on the opposite side of the River Ericht. It is the second biggest town in the county.
