Giant Slalom Turn With Lateral Projection Ever since you started skiing you have been encouraged to keep your weight on the downhill ski. Now for the first time (officially) you are going to ski on your uphill ski. Try these two exercises to give you an idea of what it feels like: 1) Choose an easy gradient and traverse across it slowly, skis flat, with weight on the lower ski. Transfer the weight to the upper ski, but keep the lower one on the ground. Don't overdo it unless you want to sit down. Tool around for a bit. Try to keep the skis moving forward with no side slipping. 2) Try it on a steeper slope where you can use the edges with some angulation. You will of course be edging with[..]

Now there comes a time, and it is quite often a natural progression, where the method of unweighting the ski goes through a subtle change from down-slow-and-up-quick to down-hard-and-up-quick. If you drop down hard towards the end of a turn to put the pole in, the skis will unweight for an instant, allowing them to slide slightly further round against the fall line. As the weight on them increases, and because you are angulating, the edge of the lower ski will dig into the snow. This is known as setting an edge. Balance, practice and perseverance are the keys for success. First let's explain the term Inclination and Angulation. The Inclination in skiing is when your body banking inside of the turn to put the ski on edges. Your legs are used as a lever to get the maximum of angle between the ski and the snow. Depending on its construction, a ski can be bent to produce a substantial arc of reverse camber. For example, if a racer is making tight turns on ice through slalom gates, he will want the skis to be bent to their maximum to carve an arc round the gate with the minimum of sliding. On the easy gates near the finish, where the turns are little more than wiggles, a ski racer will just set the skis on their edges, with minimum reverse camber.
