Better Skiing Technique - The Parallel Turn
The Parallel Turn (or Christie as it used to be known) is the final turn that most beginners learn in ski schools. Although not used a great deal by people who have discovered the Bog Standard Plough Parallel and stuck to it, it is nevertheless excellent grounding for more advanced technique. Its simple difference to the aforementioned turn is that there is no initiating stem*. The skis are parallel all the time and are unweighted by a slow down and up slow motion. *It is possible to turn your skis while straight running with a rotation of first one thigh and then almost immediately afterwards the other thigh. For example, you want to turn left so you rotate the right thigh in the[..]
Manufactured Snow - When Mother Nature Needs a...
The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver demonstrated the importance of manufactured snow when Canada, ironically, endured the warmest winter in a century. Without manufactured snow, the Olympic events would have been severely hampered. Apart from keeping ski resorts from going bare during peak season, snow cannons and manufactured snow makes it possible for year-round skiing. The ability to manufacture snow by manipulating the temperature of air as it mixes with water, or by simply using finely-chopped ice, has encouraged more people to participate in winter sports. Both France (SnowHall) and Germany (Alpin Centre, Bottrop) claim to have the longest indoor slopes in the world, but it may[..]
Your Ski and Snowboard Check List for the Slopes
Hard Goods Hard goods is the term for all of the equipment you need for the slopes. Make sure everything is dry and stored properly when not in use. - Skis, Snowboard (or arrangements for a high end demo) Most enthusiasts own their own skis or snowboard. It makes parking lot to slope time shorter and your skills will develop faster with the consistency the same equipment provides. If you do not own your own skis or board be sure to make arrangements for rentals or a high end demo in advance to avoid long delays. Ski blades are a fun alternative to skiing or snowboarding. - Bindings A safety check on all bindings is recommended before heading out to the slopes. If it has been a while[..]
Now we're going to try a few bumps linked together, so instead of side slipping to a halt in the dip, keep up some forward momentum by pointing the skis more down the hill. You should almost come to a stop on the bump before dropping over it. Remember the pole plant. Gauge your speed, and use the dip with the snow in it to brake you before the next pole plant. You will have to keep a very close look at the ground; anticipate the braking trough, and the accelerating downside, and move your weight slightly backwards for the dip and slightly forwards for the downside. This weight shift backwards and forwards needs some explanation. You will recall that as a general rule the weight should[..]
Giant Slalom Turn With Lateral Projection Ever since you started skiing you have been encouraged to keep your weight on the downhill ski. Now for the first time (officially) you are going to ski on your uphill ski. Try these two exercises to give you an idea of what it feels like: 1) Choose an easy gradient and traverse across it slowly, skis flat, with weight on the lower ski. Transfer the weight to the upper ski, but keep the lower one on the ground. Don't overdo it unless you want to sit down. Tool around for a bit. Try to keep the skis moving forward with no side slipping. 2) Try it on a steeper slope where you can use the edges with some angulation. You will of course be edging with[..]
You Too Can Ski Down Mount Everest
Getting to the summit is optional, getting down is mandatory. - David Breashears- Extreme Skier Maegan Carney Extreme skier Maegan Carney had made a bid to be the first woman, and second person to ski down the world's tallest mountain. Because of the high winds of Mount Everest at that time, Maegan Carney abandoned her first summit attempt. To find more information about Maegan's quest, go to the website. Preparation Is The Secret: Before you climb a mountain, you need some major preparations: You definitely need to be physically and emotionally fit. You should have people in the group who know first aid and of coarse you have a first aid kit. Make sure you have a schedule set up,[..]
Now there comes a time, and it is quite often a natural progression, where the method of unweighting the ski goes through a subtle change from down-slow-and-up-quick to down-hard-and-up-quick. If you drop down hard towards the end of a turn to put the pole in, the skis will unweight for an instant, allowing them to slide slightly further round against the fall line. As the weight on them increases, and because you are angulating, the edge of the lower ski will dig into the snow. This is known as setting an edge. It is in effect a braking movement as the ski will quite often stop dead. You can then jump around into the next turn. As I say the lower ski is quite often motionless for a[..]
Carve Your Turn Like a Ski Pro - Get the Best...
Some skiers can do these perfect lines on the snow without skidding. It is no special secret to reach this goal. The two most important ingredients are Inclination and Angulation. Balance, practice and perseverance are the keys for success. First let's explain the term Inclination and Angulation. The Inclination in skiing is when your body banking inside of the turn to put the ski on edges. Your legs are used as a lever to get the maximum of angle between the ski and the snow. Unfortunately the inclination is not enough to hold you in balance. You need speed and Angulation. Use this drill to develop your inclination skills. Without your poles try to reach the ground in the inside of the[..]
Ski Technique - Edging and Carving the Skis
In the article 'A Little Bit about the Ski' there is some stuff about reverse camber where I mention that the ski is designed as a spring. Depending on its construction, a ski can be bent to produce a substantial arc of reverse camber. For example, if a racer is making tight turns on ice through slalom gates, he will want the skis to be bent to their maximum to carve an arc round the gate with the minimum of sliding. On the easy gates near the finish, where the turns are little more than wiggles, a ski racer will just set the skis on their edges, with minimum reverse camber. Edging is just setting the ski on its edge, whilst carving is applying the sort of pressure to make the ski bend[..]
Better Ski Technique - The Snowplough Turn
This basic turn can be done with or without poles at the start. By leaning over on to one ski while moving in the snowplough position, the weighted ski will turn. The weight is then transferred to the other ski to turn in the opposite direction. It should be emphasised that the weight remains on the outside ski until the next turn, i.e. the skier gets a feel of continually weighting the downhill ski. Different ski instructors use different verbs to describe the snowplough steering action, but the instruction and demonstration must be as simple as possible! I demonstrate with an exaggerated upper body lean over on to the outside ski, sometimes bringing my hand down on to my thigh to point[..]

Advances in Technology Make Ski Goggles Better...
If you ski or snowboard, then ski goggles are an essential part of your sporting gear. A day on the slopes without a good pair can be uncomfortable. Add extreme weather and you can be just downright miserable. Your ski goggles offer many types of protection - protection from UV rays, protection from glare, and because they are relatively large they offer wind protection to a good part of the face. Also, the large lenses of ski goggles offer an excellent view including peripheral vision. Advances in the materials used for the frames have resulted in flexible materials that hold their shape and, because they don't become brittle in the cold, they offer optimum protection to the face. These[..]
How to Find the Right Cross Country Ski Boots
If your hobby involves gliding down the side of a snowy mountain with nothing between you and the ground but a pair of skis, then you know that having the correct equipment is not only important, but actually crucial to your safety. The base of Beaver Creek Colorado is at 8100 feet, with the summit at 11,400 feet. What does that mean? It means 3,340 feet of rise into some of the best powder I've ever seen in my life. It means a long enough run that I can take advantage of the inter-village runs, and rub elbows with the folks over at Bachelor Gulch or Arrowhead Village, so I'm not missing out on either of those destinations either! It means the air is going to be that sweet sort of dry that makes for awesome snow without that cold, wet feeling. It means there are over a dozen lifts taking me up to 140 trails that cover something like 1600 acres of slopes. It means "I'm gonna have a great time!" To ski Beaver[..]
